Bucco Bruce Arians
Joe can only imagine the F-bombs flowing from Bucco Bruce Arians when he found out a bunch of his former assistant coaches got fired by Todd Bowles.
But Joe knows Arians is a realist, not a mafia Godfather. He knows what happens when talented teams struggle mightily under a new head coach. Heads roll.
Heck, Arians told NBC Sports insider Peter King 10 months ago that he thought the Bucs were likely to finish 10-7 in 2022 if Tom Brady missed some time with an injury. And that kind of record wouldn’t be good enough to give Arians the in-house muscle to hand off the head coaching job to Todd Bowles in 2023, so Arians did it last year.
Instead, the Bucs went 8-9 with Brady healthy and were embarrassed in the playoffs. So Arians should have expected change.
TampaBay.com reporter Rick Stroud told WDAE Radio this week that Arians is pissed off by the firings.
“Not happy. Very unhappy. Extremely unhappy,” Stroud said.
“Having had some interaction with him about it … he’s disappointed. You know, he’s disappointed. I guess that’s the biggest thing. You know, he wanted Todd to have this opportunity. He wanted to keep this staff together. He wanted these [coaching] families to be together; many of them have another year on their contracts. Many of them thought they would be here as long as Todd is the head coach, were told as much, and that’s not the case. And so he’s hurt by it. I don’t know if you’re going to see him around much next year.”
The next tell on Arians’ involvement at One Buc Palace likely will be at the NFL Scouting Combine in late February. If he’s not there in his role as advisor to the general manager, then it’s a safe bet Arians is officially prioritizing his 9-iron over his red pen.
“Many of them thought they would be here as long as Todd is the head coach, were told as much, and that’s not the case.”
Bit of a paradox. If they had stayed and Bowles had stayed, they would all be fired. They were fired so Bowles could stay. Best case scenario for Bruce tbh.
Gone with a whimper
Time to cut ties with BA as well — he’s not helping.
I’m pretty sure the Glazers kept the wrong guy.
Starting to sound like his loyalty is getting in the way of his job. He’s disappointed that some of these coaches have seen their product decline over the last three years since they won a Super Bowl?
He needs to answer some questions about Byron Leftwich. It was glaringly obvious that Leftwhich was not the one calling the plays the last few years like we were told, and he was pretty inept.
I thought they should have fired the HC first. Now probably on the wrong track to recovery. Sad.
Maybe its time for BA to go? I’m not sure his exact role but him watching the dumpster fire and not able to help, then maybe it is time to be done. He’s never had a great draft track record so I don’t think the scouting is needed. If he would of stayed and coached…. He could have gone10-7 with Gabbert at the helm. He’s too close to Bowls too, who is too conservative and pass D was terible
Not sure how BA could be surprised.
Big deal. The team was definitely hurt by BA’s decision to step down late in the offseason.
BA was a casual HC last year and was just riding the celebration in retirement. Why he got forced out. Not really sure why he is still around.
Did Arians really think the coaches should stay in place after the debacle last season? They failed as coaches and hurt the team. I just don’t understand how Bowles kept his job? I understand he didn’t get to pick the coaches but he sure could have forced them to correct season long mistakes. He failed to do so and should be gone also.
Things will be interesting moving forward!! Hopefully that’s the direction things move!!!
No, BA…..we are unhappy with your decision to exit and hand over the coaching job to a loser….
So, you can be unhappy along with the rest of us.
Thanks for the SB…….
Are we going to boot another coach from the coveted ring of honor?
? Archives are available here. Many examples to find. –Joe
It’s his fault in the first place!!! His “nepotism” was a failure from the start. To hand the team over to a formerly fired head coach with a 37% winning percentage was a terrible decision that is going to haunt this franchise for years. How ” twiddle dee and twiddle dumb” accepted this little family collusion is beyond belief!! News flash! HIRE THE BEST POSSIBLE COACH AND STAFF AVAILABLE….Now we’re faced with an almost certain lame duck coach who will be unable to hire a top shelf staff due to his own status. Cutting half the disease out doesn’t cure the problem! Absolutely not the way to have a consistently competitive franchise….it seems the only ones who do not want to realize how bad this decision is are the Glazers and BUD Light….makes my stomach turn
BA is a carpet bagger that has done as much bad as good and the stink is just now beginning to rise.
BA doesn’t appear to have the best interest of the players or the fans or ownership in mind. It’s all about his ego being hurt. What did he add to this team. I’m sorry I don’t know what his position, advice or presence added to the quality of play for this team. Time for him to really retire and stop drawing a paycheck in his meaningless position.
Could you imagine trying to pass the torch to guys you’ve worked with for decades, just to look back over them and see they started burning the house down with the same light
I’m still confused as to how Arians, a HC, made Bowles the HC. Isn’t that something management/owners do?
If he didn’t want this to happen he should of kept his foot in the rear end of Bowles and Leftwich.
Bowles offensive philosophy is so different from Arians I’m surprised he’s not disappointed he took a top NFL offense and made it below average. In today’s NFL you need pro bowl lineman across the board to run the ball, but Bowles insisted. He should be gone as well! What offensive coordinator wants to come to a team that wants to run the ball but doesn’t have the offensive lineman to do so.
This whole charade of passing the torch to Bowles so he will not be left with the team in shambles ended up being a big sorry fiasco ! We will never know the truth of what really happened here but this is the story and the Bucs are sticking to it !
Thanks for the SB. You got what you wanted. Now please retire.
He can be unhappy if he wants. If he was the head coach and we had this type of season, Arians’ and the whole staff would have been fired. Instead it is just the offensive staff, in order to be fair to Bowles as a relatively new head coach. Arians should feel happy that Bowles wasn’t fired.
I am extremely in unhappy with BA for talking the Glazers into making Bowles a HC and not being more actively involved when the offense took a dump. Sorry, but after this season of stupidity I could not give a damn what BA thinks. Time for him to retire. Bye Felicia.
Friends are one thing, business is another. Maybe that’s why the season went so bad. Most of the coaches were thinking that they wouldn’t ve fired no matter how bad it went.
I don’t think Bowles would have fired so many if it weren’t from the pressure of the media, who are like sharks in the water for a juicy controversy. The people who think they no more than the actual team manager. Rebel rousers.
The coaches that were fired won a SB and took the team to the NFC championship game last season. The only changes were Gronk leaving and bowles running the show this season. Those two caused the mess!
If he didn’t think it was the coaches that got fired fault, perhaps he should start naming the names of who he feels was responsible for that crap show of a season.
Managements little WOKE Progressive experiment went horribly wrong. And they’re STILL keeping Bowels. I don’t blame The GOAT for leaving.
I’ve been a major fan of team sports since about 1964 and cannot think of another situation when a coach (particularly a short-term coach) retires and effectively hires his replacement.
Does anyone have other examples?
Seems like the franchise is falling apart
Hey BA – There is not one main reason the Bucs had an EPIC FAILURE this season but you had a hand in it just like everyone else did – from the top (Licht/Bowles/Brady) all the way down. It was a group effort. BAs timing and putting the organization in that position of his “retirement” was BS. There is a multitude of reasons and BA you are one of them. You quit on the Bucs just like the Bucs players quit on Bowles. Disappointed the Glazers didn’t FIRE EVERYONE! NO CONFIDENCE IN BOWLES. ZERO. Very good DC but he is not even an adequate head coach. We are back to a #bucslife
Arians should be glad Bowles was not fired. Leftwich was the fall guy for Bowles.
Look at the stats, Bruce. Last in rushing. Last in yards per carry. Bottom in red zone efficiency. Predictable offense with no creativity. Brady throwing 66 times in that playoff game? Bucs were 0-41 converting 3rd and 11 or longer.
Do that on any NFL team and someone is going to be fired.
We’re unhappy too Brucie. Wasted year we can’t get back. Shoulda taught Byron how to adapt and not always be who he be
Goodbye BA. Thanks for the Super Bowl. You’re no longer needed here.
We haven’t been outside of the bottom third in the league in rushing production since 2015. Some of you guys are really late on the run tendency and that’s because the pass game being strong enough to bail us out of those situations since BA arrived or Jameis throwing the ball to the other team during the Koetter regime to notice: “Hey, we only run the ball to set up the 6 different pass plays we’ve got piggy backing off this iso”
Wait while I check how much I care about what BA thinks…….
All these experts on coaching. The talent just ain’t there.
Hey Bruce, that’s pride effing with you. For someone who loves to be known as a guy that doesn’t sugarcoat things you sure need a lot of sugar for your delicate sensibilities on this situation. This team sucked most of the year and did not deserve to win 8 games, much less have an appearance in the postseason. Your guys are responsible for not having this team ready to execute on Sundays. The talent was enough for a winning record. The coaching wasn’t good enough. Accept what you are seeing not what you are feeling or wanting to see.
The fact Kieth Armstrong is still employed tells you that Bowles didn’t go far enough. Pure nepotism.
What is BA mad about? He’s the the one that dropped BL in Bowles lap, knowing that BL was a fraud. This is the result of blind loyalty.
If Brady was involved with Arians stepping down then you can blame the results on him but I guess we will never know.
When you as a head coach ONLY hire your former players and friends. When you DO NOT hire the best available coaches and are more worried about setting up your friend for success and with jobs, you bear some responsibility for 8-9.
Arians did not care about the franchise or the success of the team, he was more concerned with his friends and former players getting paid and having jobs. Leftwich was not the best play caller on staff with Arians and Tom Moore here. Byron was not getting better, was not creative and failed to adjust to what defenses were doing.
Arians hired unqualified coaches and hoped they learned on the job. If he’s unhappy it’s on him for bringing along unqualified coaches like Byron.
Did Arians not watch the games this season? He should be embarrassed, not disappointed.
Majority of Bucs fans extremely unhappy Bowles is still HC!
Perhaps Rita Moreno can console him.
It’s time and appreciate TB helping with the SB and the year after, but he looked timid and out of sync. Yes we had injuries, but the O line gave him enough time and he missed easy throws or got happy feet. He’s 45 !!! The biggest issue was not having a power Back and I don’t know why they gave up on Ronald Jones so quickly, but it would have been nice to see him and white running the ball. Change is inevitable and by bringing Tom back just shows the Glazers are all about bleeding Buc fans dry and avoiding the rebuild? It needs to happen now and the most disappointing thing as a PAYING fan is that I thought when he arrived the culture would change and it did for 2 seasons, but this year it was so apparent that it was gone and IMO there was resentment, dislike, and a lack of enthusiasm by both sides. I love Mike, Shaq, White, and others but it’s time to trade those and others for picks and like I’ve been saying JL needs to spend time with the Bolts organization and learn how to win and stay competitive year after year. I don’t understand how he’s not on the hot seat because we all know the rebuild needs to start ASAP!!!!
Has Bowles been fired yet
Clearly it is time for the Glazer’s and their WOKE organization to sell and Move On . Bucs
Uncle Bruce isn’t happy that nepotism isn’t working according to plan. Bucs kind of made a deal with the devil when they brought in BA. “I’ll only come in if you hire all my guys”. Then he arrived with all his guys “ok I’m not gonna call plays on offense. Byron Leftwich will. He’s fantastic. A rising star. Trust me”
And now that his super old school approach and Byron’s stubbornness and stupidity is obvious and there are consequences… BA is mad.
BA your time is up and thank you for the couple of years !!!
Well Bruce, they tried it your way with Todd and it was a disaster. Should’ve cleaned house top to bottom.
David hit the nail on the head. His loyalty is getting in the way of his job. Either you work for the betterment of the team or you don’t. No way keeping that dysfunctional coaching staff together was in the best interest of the Buccaneers. These decisions need to be made by the GM or the owner, not the former coach. Time to move on. BA is either all in or all out.
Fans are the absolute worst. 1 bad year erases 3 good years. People calling for coaches job after 1 bad season.. be prepared to be bad for a few years now.. cause it’s not getting better next year.. fans give people zero time to learn or to make mistakes.. hope they fire some of yall
If you’re going to get off the boat you need to get all the way off. This influence thing that BA has done as been a disaster.
The Bucs would never have hired Todd Bowles but for BA pushing them, and the line of succession.
BA thought he was helping Bowles but it makes Bowles position one of nepotism and actually hurts him because he seems a fraud because of it.
After all these years, Arians still doesn’t understand that football is a business, and the fans are the stock holders.
I say Bucs fans honor BA again for his efforts to insert unqualified diverse coaches in the Bucs organization to fill his own selfish, arrogant agenda. The fact that he shows his face in One Bucs Place takes balls. So many thanks BA, thanks for the losing season, thanks for giving your buddies jobs, thanks for sticking it to the Bucs organization, thanks putting a hurt on Brady’s legacy, thanks for lying to the team and management, thanks for QUITTING at the worst time, thanks for setting you diverse initiative back 5 years and a special thanks from ALL the season ticket holders you screwed.
BA killed the Bucs!!!
Grateful to BA for the SB trophy but frankly he created this mess with his succession plan that set back the franchise. He’s collecting a paycheck from the Glazers for doing next to nothing. He should keep quiet. Someone has to clean up his mess.
I get it. Arians is a guy who likes to help people who work hard, give opportunities.
So of course he is disappointed.
Hey, so long as Bowles is one of the coaches who only has a year left, that’s actually a good thing.
Whoever becomes the OC is looking at a dead-end job…unless promises are made.
We needed a clean slate. We didn’t get it, and now we’re looking at another bad year. Beyond that? Anything can happen…a good coach, some free agents, a couple good drafts…and we could be on top once more.
BA is unhappy w the firings? Why? He should have gotten the axe himself. BA, the HC and all the remaining coaches should have been dispatched. Why wait a year to fire Bowles? You know it’s going to happen. Then we have to do this song and dance again.
Im venture ti say he will be back coaching believing the fired staff deserves to be employed and why not they were good with him. His mistake for referring Bowles a proven bad head coach no matter how much he likes him. So when team starts to fail he blames staff n not himself. Now he will fail. W new staff and say I need more time it’s new schemes blah blah. Bucs will get heat firing him and being black fired coach more heat although we hire more minorities than anyone. Glaziers missed there chance by keeping rather than landing an offensive coach in Payton in a passing league w out talent. A no brainer. Tom I would be back and has better arm than Breese had his last three years.
The defense was awful the last 2 playoff games these players were in–that on Bowles he needs to go!!!!!!!!!!
Performance based business Brucie the Bucs aren’t a charity we’re all your piss poor buddies get jobs for life sorry maybe you should of stayed if you cared that much
BA best coach of our history. I will miss his coaching style and his red pen, his calling of key risk it plays in certain situations.
Great coach. Made Tampa a Super Bowl winner as much as anyone else.
Someone needs to remind Bruce Arians that these are not Civil Service jobs. The coaching jobs are performance-based, and all about winning games.
Arians, when he was hired here, said that the only reason he was coming back was to get Bowles and Leftwich a head coaching job. Bowles, he succeeded, with Leftwich, LOL! But give Arians credit for nearly pulling off one of the biggest scams in NFL history. If he could have gotten Leftwich the head coaching job in Jacksonville, a job that idiot Leftwich turned down, I mean, that’s a hell of a legacy.
Also, the Arians coaching tree, with Bowles and Leftwich both becoming headcoaches, and both black, the woke sport reporters would put Arians in the HOF for that.
With that said I don’t think Arians was just trying to get recognition for himself by making these guys headcoaches, but it was clearly very important to him.
I agree with your points Buccaneer Bonzai. I think that’s a first for me, haha.
You’re right that this is a dead-end job for an OC. We currently have no idea who the QB is going to be next year. In fact, most coordinator jobs in the NFL are dead end jobs because there are either question marks about the status of the starting QB or status of the Head Coach. With the Bucs it’s a double whammy.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, ol chap and everyone has a good plan, until it’s 1st and 10 up the gut.
We are all disappointed here, BA….
The real question is who ordered the firings? Is Bruce upset with Bowles or the organization that may have demanded the changes. If it was Bowles decisions, Bruce has to let him run it his way. After all he anointed Todd coach.
This should be an extremely interesting offseason. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Arians should be upset the coaches he anointed let him down.
If you refer to people as “woke” in the pejorative, then I’m convinced you’ve called non-white people racial slurs out of anger irl at least once. Partisanship in 2023 is just vegan prejudice lol you aren’t fooling anybody
Bruce, your boys sucked without you as the CEO. That’s it. That’s all. Time to drink up and move on.
Like many of us Buc fans. The wreckage is significant .
geno@ it’s apparent working part-time is good enough for you. I give him credit for one thing and one thing only, wining and dining Brady.
Sorry Bruce you gave your job to who you thought was your friend then when push came to shove he blamed everyone but himself so much for character. Bowles day is coming you can bet on that whether its next year or hopefully not the following. I am not sure how many bad years this fanbase can take.
Goodbye Bruce, you will be missed.
Bucco Bruce Arians
