A winter weather advisory has been issued across the Lehigh Valley for Wednesday's winter storm. Snow totals have been downgraded, but conditions could still be hazardous for commuters.National Weather Service
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say a “burst of snow” from a Wednesday winter storm will impact the morning commute, with ice and rain in store for the evening rush.
Winter weather advisories have been issued for the Lehigh Valley and northwest New Jersey, urging drivers to be cautious on slippery roads.
Expected snow totals have been revised downward — the National Weather Service now expects 1 to 3 inches of accumulation across Lehigh, Northampton and Warren counties, which matches AccuWeather’s projections. Even just an inch and a half would make this the Lehigh Valley’s most significant snowfall of the season so far and double the area’s official snow total to date.
The weather service’s advisories take effect at 7 a.m. Wednesday, when it says snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch an hour early in the day. The snow will change over to a wintry mix and rain in the afternoon. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are anticipated.
The advisory is set to expire at 4 p.m. Wednesday for Berks and Lehigh counties, and at 7 p.m. for Northampton and Warren counties, where a light glaze of ice is also expected.
The advisory continues until 10 p.m. in Carbon and Monroe counties to the north. Snow totaling 2 to 5 inches, along with ice and wind, are expected there.
Up to half a foot of snow is forecast for central Pennsylvania, where a winter storm watch is in effect from late Tuesday to Wednesday evening.
